	1525 : in a forest in the Cévennes in France, peasant women from many regions band together to fight the enclosure of common lands. A few centuries later, construction in the forest is under the watchful eye of Annie, a solitary 75-year-old night watchwoman. One night, the landscape is turned upside down.

“What kinds of imaginary and historical resistance run through and link up the different temporalities of a region? In her first feature-length documentary, whose title is inspired by Monique Wittig’ Guérillères, Elsa Brès explores the tales and collective struggles that irrigate the Cévennes landscape, continuing a reflection begun in her installations and previous films. (...)Devoid of dialogues and giving room for a sensory experience, the mise en scène centres on the lush vegetation and the bodies that live there, weaving a narrative where humans and animals join together to combat capitalism and patriarchy. By opening breaches in time, possible continuities take shape between the struggles of yesterday and those of today, inviting us to imagine other ways of inhabiting the world.”

The exhibition is organized in partnership with Fondation d'entreprise Pernod Ricard, and the support of Centre National des Arts Plastiques (CNAP).
	Connivéncia by Elsa Brès presents a body of work and research around her latest film project Les Sanglières and its territory of resistance, the Cévennes. The artist investigates the figure of the boar as a potential ally in the anti-patriarchal and anti-capitalist struggle.

“During the summer of 2020, pictures of a naked sunbather chasing a team of wild boars across a lakeside beach in Berlin spread rapidly online. With the sunbather’s laptop in its mouth, the hastily captured smartphone images helped reinforce the myth of the boar as a troublesome animal. A wild animal that refuses to stay in the wild.
Exploring confrontation and the relations between human and non-human, Brès questions anthropocentric fictions of ‘Nature’ that make our existence within an interconnected ecology hard to recognise. Constructing a non-human world in which wild boars are the primary protagonists, this experimental fiction artwork uses quantitative ecology tools to help guide its script – including geospatial mapping systems and a team of algorithmically animated boars. Manipulating data points, Brès uses mapping as a tool to open up new prospects for alliances between human and non-human. Sitting somewhere between the real and virtual, the world she constructs helps us imagine alternate ways of seeing the world, confronting prevailing anthropocentric philosophies towards a speculation for a communism of the living.
Traversing the borders between artistic production, research and exhibition, the work builds towards the production of Brès’ new film to be shown at a future edition of transmediale.”

FIDMarseille 2020&#38;nbsp;international competition Flash&#38;nbsp;international competition CNAPThe first attempts to map the Mississippi Delta date back to the early 18th century. Since then, it has been constantly transformed to be exploited. Meandering between times and spaces, Sweat gradually immerses us between the lines of the maps, in the fluctuating and insubordinate part of the Mississippi delta, by following living beings that inhabitate it, human and more-than-human, toward another story.

Les premières tentatives de cartographier le delta du Mississippi remontent au début du 18e siècle. Il est depuis constamment transformé pour être exploité.
Navigant entre les temps et les espaces, Sweat nous immerge progressivement entre les lignes des cartes, dans la part insubordonnée et fluctuante de ce territoire, en compagnie d’êtres vivants qui le peuplent, humain et plus qu’humain, vers un autre récit. &#38;nbsp;

Counting, walking, getting lost, then dissolving into the landscape. Such is the movement in which Elsa Brès involves us in Sweat, a film shot in the Mississippi delta. At the very beginning, at the pace of a walker, the mischievously incomplete count of steps, captured in fragments. A scansion that is both a recollection of the first mapping of the delta (as suggested by the outfit), and an elementary impulse to measure the world. An opening gesture that the film quickly erases to better go with the flow, drift, and immerse us into the meanderings of the river, between flood tides and overflowing. We drift from one nameless place to the next, following tributaries, through a luxurious nature, bearing scars of human presence and exploitation, like the gigantic oil complex we catch a glimpse of. Through this both sensorial and mental journey, between yesterday and today, while alluding to fruitless fights to try and tame the elements (flood, swarms of insects), the film gives prominence to brief encounters, either with men or animals. An invitation to let ourselves be absorbed into the very matter of a space with unstable contours, made of indecisively drawn banks, like so many convergence lines. Thus, Sweat draws the passage from a charted area to the shapeless, from the ridged map to the smooth space, to borrow Gilles Deleuze’s words. And here we are, plunged into an environment teeming with the noise of its inhabitants, rustling like so many cautionary news about the excesses of a delta that is lived-in, oozy, sweaty, as indicated by the title, like a body, a living organism.

“Compter, marcher, se perdre, puis se dissoudre dans le paysage. Tel semble être le mouvement dans lequel Elsa Brès nous embarque avec Sweat, tourné dans le delta du Mississippi. En amorce, au rythme d’un marcheur, le décompte malicieusement lacunaire de ses pas, saisi par bribes. Une scansion qui vaut autant comme souvenir de la première cartographie du delta – sa tenue y fait allusion – que comme geste élémentaire de mesure du monde. Un geste inaugural que le film s’emploiera à faire oublier pour mieux se laisser porter, dériver et nous immerger dans les méandres du fleuve, entre flots et débordements. Une dérive menant de lieux en lieux, non nommés, au fil des affluents, dans une nature luxuriante, marquée de cicatrices de l’exploitation et de la présence humaine, à l’instar de ce gigantesque complexe pétrolier entr’aperçu. Fluidité d’un parcours aussi sensoriel que mental, entre hier et aujourd’hui, au gré des luttes que l’on devine avec la puissance des éléments et de leur maîtrise que l’on comprend vaine – inondation, déferlement de nuées d’insectes -, pour laisser la part belle aux rencontres furtives, humaines ou animales. Une invitation à se laisser absorber dans la matière même d’un espace aux contours mouvants, fait de berges aux tracés indécis, devenus comme autant de lignes de fuite. Ainsi Sweat dessine le passage d’une zone cartographiée à l’informe, du strié de la carte au lisse du milieu selon les mots empruntés à Gilles Deleuze. Et nous, plongés dans un monde sonore grouillant des êtres qui le peuplent, tout de bruissements émaillés comme autant d’avertissements de dépêches relatant les démesures d’un delta habité, suant, suintant comme le titre nous l’indique, tel un corps, un organisme vivant”

“This bias is also that of Andrea 1420 (2018), a very political photo novel with riotous resonances finished as the Yellow Vests movement began. We find there the taste of the fragmentary and the fleeting making impossible any one-dimensional reading: by texts of very diverse nature and photographs taken by infrared hunting camera, we follow from 2014 to 2025 a herd of wild pigs in the Cevennes whose we learn that it has "taken over the territory" of an abandoned housing estate before robbing the museum of the Philharmonie de Paris to make disappear the oldest hunting horn of the collections. Not unrelated to cinema, the medium of the photo novel - historically discredited because of its essentially female and popular readership - is here invested as a place of experimentation, a prelude to a film to come.”&#38;nbsp;
“Ce parti pris est aussi celui d’Andrea 1420 (2018), roman-photo très politique aux résonnances émeutières terminé alors que commençait le mouvement des Gilets jaunes. On y retrouve le goût du fragmentaire et du fugitif rendant impossible toute lecture unidimensionnelle : par des textes de nature très diverses et des photographies prises par caméra de chasse infrarouge, on y suit de 2014 à 2025 une harde de cochongliers des Cévennes dont on apprend qu’elle a « repris le territoire » d’un chantier de lotissement abandonné avant de braquer le musée de la Philharmonie de Paris pour en faire disparaître la plus ancienne corne de chasse des collections. Non sans lien avec le cinéma, le medium du roman-photo – historiquement déconsidéré en raison de son lectorat essentiellement féminin et populaire – est ici investi comme un lieu d’expérimentation, prélude à un film à venir. ”

 a 140 ans, un canal est creusé et jamais mis en eau. Un jour, des 
vagabonds décident de descendre un fleuve invisible et ramassent en 
chemin les débris d’un monde pour en commencer un autre.
300 million years ago, the north of France was a wetland. 
140 years ago,
 a canal is dug and never filled with water. 
One day, vagabonds decide 
to go down an invisible river and pick on the way débris of a world to 
start a new one.
